Was ist denn los? Nur will ihn niemand beschützen.)

„Hey, was wollt ihr!

Big Time.

English Version:

MISS THOMPSON IN DETROIT

Is Charlie the DEVIL 2.0 or new  FOLK HERO #1?

Is Charlie Sheen’s devil message “Career suicide is my new career!”?  Or perhaps he’s just saying,  “Hey People! Be happy, become crack addicts and live with prostitutes…but you better treat them like wives.”

Satan check! In front of Charlie’s house last week in LA, I found no overt signs of Satan. I mean anyone can call himself a warlock, right? And, just because you smell pine doesn’t mean Satan’s in the neighborhood.

It wasn’t until just before Charlie’s gig in Detroit that evidence of Satanism began to emerge. Charlie chose to communicate through his intern, who had everything one needs to be Charlie’s intern. To start, her name is Isis, which is ironically very close to “Iblis,” the Arabic word for Devil.  Now, that could simplybe a coincidence.  But, I’m just saying.

So we went to Detroit, Delta LAX-DETROIT, sold out flight, certainly chock full of Satan worshipers. And that’s where it started. Charlie secretly read Immanuel Kant while his entourage slept off their hangovers. Kant described the devil as “absolute selfishness“ and with that notion loose in Charlie’s mind like a weed whacker, he took to the stage in cold, hard, rainy Detroit.

Under the limelight, Charlie asked for a little patience as he changed into “something a little sexier“ (Charlie Sheen).  He came back in his famous shiny sweat pants and oversized shirt looking skinny and small, like a little, broken, malnourished boy.  And sweating profusely!  What do you expect? He was nervous! Isn’t Satan nervous?

Then he took off his shirt to reveal his ripped six-pack along with his tattered, washed-out little tattoos, all prison-style, not the like fancy tats in Venice beach or at West Hollywood nightclubs. More like weird little blotches on his upper pecs, a pure dedication to the “Apocalypse Now“ body-style. A homage to father, no doubt.

Unfortunately, the six-pack couldn’t pull it off alone. It wasn’t quite enough to keep the audience hooked. So, Charlie sat on a little chair wondering what to do? “Drug jokes, they always work!” He thought. “Rehab rants, yes!”  Then Charlie launched into a rehab reenactment opening with, “Who’s done crack before? Please raise your hand!“ and then he raised his own hand. The audience went wild! “And that’s not all!,” he followed up. “I also took Ambien, they call it the devil’s aspirin!”  Whoa, there you have it. Maybe he is the devil after all.

“What’s friggin Ambien?” belted some guy behind me. “It’s a Hollywood drug. Nobody wants it or knows about it in Detroit.” Then Sheen thought to himself “Cuz, In Detroit you all fall asleep because you work like crazy and don’t need sleeping pills at night.” So, maybe Detroit didn’t want to see a devil in the flesh. “What’s wrong with them?,” Charlie thought? “Every catholic needs a devil otherwise the whole system breaks down.” And Charlie was a handsome devil, at least back in the day. But maybe Charlie was just better as a virtual devil, an Internet devil, Satan 2.0. All of his Tweets had a lot more “Sheenius“ than Charlie had on stage. On stage he was so little, and nobody wanted to protect him.

But what if Charlie wasn’t the Warlock he claimed to be? Or Satan? Maybe people paid money not to see Satan but rather to see a new folk hero and to party with him. In Charlie Sheen’s presence, you can get drunk, do cocaine, and bang hookers without feeling bad. He failed, you failed so lets fucking drink! Maybe the audience paid for this, like they pay to get rid of their sins.

Even before Sheen arrived that night in the theater (one hour late, because he was reading KANT in the bathtub) there was a proper Munich-style Oktoberfest under way. Men and woman were already sideways drunk and ready to go fist to cuffs or vomit from alcohol poising.

You could buy candies. Guys were schlepping gallons of beer around. There were three full bars with every imaginable drink and little empty cocaine bags littered the bathrooms.  You could buy all kinds Charlie Sheen fans stuff: shirts, ashtrays and underwear (for girls) that said “#winning“ or “I am not bipolar; I am winning“ or little punk shirts with “Goddess, property of Charlie Sheen.“  (My friend bought me one. I am really happy.)

Could Charlie radicalize people with t-shirts and mugs and make them see the folk hero in him? He sure gave it a college try during the show, yelling “Hey! This is radical, here!“ and “Wow, that sounds radical!“ It didn’t really work, however, at least not in the sense of communism. In America, nobody wants to see himself as a “worker,” but rather as a soon-to-be millionaire.

The tough Detroit crowd wasn’t interested in Charlie’s “I am like you. We are the people“ thing.  That could because Charlie’s message came directly from a multi-million dollar mansion in Beverly Hills and not from a place or a city where people have to eat stuff they find in the trash.

Charlie’s Beverly Hills jokes and little animated movies (or rather his very, very, old short film that he must have found in his garage, which he “directed“ and which “starred” a baby-faced Johnny Depp playing a guy who drives around town.) turned out to be a flop. A big-time flop!  It was like the movie you make when you are totally baked and it seems hysterical at the time but turns out to be embarrassing once you sober up. Only Charlie never had the embarrassment realization, or maybe he never sobered up.  Instead he showed the film as if the whole audience were stoned on the sofa with him in 1983 while his entourage whispered in his ear, “That shit’s funny!”

So, what did the audience pay for? Maybe to be in a love-hate relationship with a Hollywood star, something they see on the Internet everyday. But now, as it is 2.0, they can be a part of it, live. At the end, they wanted to beat Charlie up and yet they still loved him. In fact, they were crazy about him, as if he were one of their own.
